What Is a Special Issue?

Special Issues (SIs) at the Journal of 21st Century Pathology are thematic collections of peer-reviewed articles centered around a subject of defined and timely interest within the scope of the journal. Each Special Issue is conceived, developed, and led by recognized experts in the field who serve as Guest Editors.

Unlike a regular journal issue—which comprises a broad range of topics submitted independently—a Special Issue is a targeted scholarly collection. It is not equivalent to a standard journal issue, but rather a curated grouping of manuscripts unified by a common theme, purposefully organized to foster dialogue and accelerate knowledge in emerging areas such as AI-integrated pathology, spatial diagnostics, and biomedical visualization.

Guest Editors guide the scope, invite relevant contributors, manage peer review processes (as needed), and help ensure the scholarly quality and relevance of each submission within the thematic focus.

Proposing a Special Issue

To propose a Special Issue, prospective Guest Editors should submit:

  • A concise summary of the proposed topic
  • A list of potential contributors (optional)
  • A suggested timeline for article submission and review
  • A brief outline of the significance and scope of the issue

Proposals are evaluated based on relevance, novelty, feasibility, and alignment with the journal’s focus areas.

Role and Benefits of Guest Editors

Guest Editors are central to the success of a Special Issue. Their responsibilities include:

  • Defining the scope and scientific vision of the issue
  • Inviting contributions from relevant experts
  • Overseeing the editorial and peer review process in collaboration with journal Editors
Benefits of serving as a Guest Editor:
  • Advance research in a key area of pathology and diagnostics
  • Build visibility and recognition in the scientific community
  • Expand international networks across academia, clinical practice, and industry
  • Gain valuable editorial experience and strengthen your professional profile

Lead Guest Editors also guide topic development, assemble a team of co-editors, and ensure the scholarly quality of submissions.
